For all learner drivers, it’s a very exciting moment when your driving instructor tells you that you are ready for your driving test. Below are some top tips to help you prepare for the big day to maximise your chances of passing.
- Be prepared for your test, a few days before double check that you have all the correct paperwork, and double check the test date and time. You will need to take your UK driving licence and theory test certificate.
- Book a driving lesson prior to your test, this will help to reduce your anxiety and means that you can get to the test centre in plenty of time for your test. Your lesson isn’t to learn anything just to help you prepare and relax.
- It might be a while since you passed your theory test so now is a great time to refresh your knowledge.
- Although your instructor has said you are ready for your driving test, you may have to wait a while for a test date, keep up your regular driving lessons during this period to practice.
- Plan what your clothes and footwear for test day, choose something comfortable to drive in. This may sound unimportant, but you don’t want to be distracted in any way by uncomfortable clothing or unsuitable footwear.
- Before your test make sure you can answer any show me tell me questions that may be asked relating to the car you will be driving on test day.
- On the day of your test, try to maintain your normal routine, if you need glasses make sure you have these ready and if you are not too nervous make sure you eat and drink as you would normally.
- If you are expecting to be anxious on test day, talk to your driving instructor as they will have helped countless people with test nerves and they should be able to provide advice, reassurance and provide suggestions on how to combat your nerves.
- Listen to the examiner carefully and make sure you fully understand what is being asked. If you are not 100% sure which way the examiner asked you to go, then go the safe way. For example if you are in the wrong lane approaching a junction and you don’t have time or can’t change lanes then go the way the lane you are in says to go.
- Be kind to yourself! Remember that not everyone does pass their test first time and you can retake it. We all make mistakes and it’s fine if you do to.
